A client asked me something recently that I think a lot of founders wonder but rarely ask out loud: “Why does the quote include a separate AuthServer? Isn’t that just… more stuff to pay for?”
It’s a fair question. And the honest answer is: sometimes yes, it’s overkill. Sometimes it’s exactly the thing that saves your product later. The difference comes down to a few concrete signals, not a blanket rule.
What the AuthServer actually does
Every app you use has some piece that checks who you are and what you’re allowed to do: the screen where you type your email and password, the code that verifies it, and the part that remembers you’re logged in as you click around. That piece is the AuthServer, short for authentication server.
Think of it like the ID checkpoint at the entrance of a building. It’s a simple job: check credentials, hand out a badge, let people through. Everything that happens after you’re inside, the actual product, the dashboards, the features you’re paying for, is a separate concern.
The question is just: does that checkpoint live inside the building itself, or does it live in its own booth outside?
Two ways to build it, both valid
Bundled in. The AuthServer lives inside the same application as everything else. One codebase, one thing to deploy, one server to run. This is simpler, cheaper, and faster to build. For a huge number of products, especially a first version, this is the right call.
Separated out. The AuthServer runs as its own independent service. Your main product talks to it to check who’s logged in, but it can be down, get rebuilt, or scale up on its own without touching the rest of your app. This costs more to set up and run, but it buys you flexibility and isolation you don’t get any other way.
Neither option is “the professional one” and neither is “the cheap one.” They fit different situations.
A real example: how ABP Framework handles this
I build most of my client projects on ABP Framework, a well-established platform for building business applications on .NET. It’s a good example here because it makes this exact decision visible instead of hiding it.
ABP’s free, open-source starter template runs the AuthServer inside your main application. You get one project, one thing to deploy, and a working login screen from day one. For most new products, especially an MVP or a first version for a small number of users, this is more than enough.
Their paid, commercial template takes the opposite default: it splits the AuthServer into its own separate application right from the start. That’s not because separating it is always “more correct.” It’s because the kind of client who reaches for the paid tier is usually already past the point where bundling makes sense: multiple applications that need to share one AuthServer, larger teams, enterprise customers with their own requirements, or plans to scale each piece independently.
In other words, even the tool I use to build these systems treats a separate AuthServer as a decision you graduate into, not a box you’re required to check on day one.
When it’s actually worth separating
You don’t need to memorize architecture patterns to make this call. Ask yourself these questions instead:
- Do more than one of your applications need to share the same AuthServer? A customer-facing app and an internal admin tool both checking the same accounts is a strong signal.
- Will enterprise customers demand their own login setup? Things like single sign-on with their own company systems usually push the AuthServer out on its own.
- Does the AuthServer need to survive even if the main app is being updated or has an issue? If yes, it needs to be independent.
- Are you expecting a lot more login traffic than everything else? A consumer app with a huge signup spike benefits from scaling the AuthServer on its own.
- Do you have a compliance or security reason to keep who-can-log-in physically separate from what-they-can-do? Some industries require that separation as a matter of policy, not preference.
If none of these apply yet, bundling the AuthServer in is not a shortcut you’ll regret. It’s the appropriate choice for where you are.
What it actually costs you either way
Bundled in: less to set up, less to host, less to monitor. The trade-off is that everything is more tightly coupled. It works well right up until one of the signals above shows up.
Separated out: more moving parts (another service to host, another thing that can go down, more coordination between pieces), but real isolation and independent scaling for the AuthServer. It also tends to cost more in hosting and a bit more in initial setup time.
Good news: if it’s built properly from the start, moving from a bundled AuthServer to a separate one later isn’t a rewrite. It’s closer to relocating a room that was always designed to stand on its own. That’s the whole point of building it the right way even when you start simple.
The takeaway
If a developer tells you the AuthServer needs to be its own separate service, don’t take that as either “they’re overengineering this” or “they know best, just trust it.” Ask which of the signals above actually applies to your product right now. If the honest answer is none of them, bundling the AuthServer in is the right call, and you can revisit it later without starting over.
